About paella catering in the Isle of Wight
Paella is generous food: giant pans, saffron colour and a toasted crust that everyone fights over. It makes the food an event in itself. We’re frequently asked to cater naming days and family parties and festivals, fairs and school events, serving black rice, mixed paella and paella Valenciana.
The paella is cooked in huge, shallow pans over gas burners. It needs a level spot with some shelter and good ventilation, which we agree with you beforehand.
- First, tell us about your event.
- We suggest paellas and extras and send a clear quote.
- Timings, access and the cooking area are agreed in advance.
- We cook live on the day while guests watch.
- It’s served straight from the pan, and we clear our area afterwards.
Cost
Access and travel can make a difference to the cost, so tell us about the venue when you ask for a quote. Everything is confirmed in writing.

What’s near Newport
You will find us cooking near Castle Inn, The Man in the Moon and Seaclose Park, among other places. You will also find Christ The King College (0.6 miles south-west), Island Innovation VI Form Campus (less than half a mile south-east) and Nine Acres Primary School (under half a mile south). Nearby you’ll also find Carisbrooke Castle (1 mile south-west) and St Mary's Hospital (0.8 miles north). The countryside around Newport includes Briddlesford Nature Reserve and Mill Hill.
Planning live paella in the Isle of Wight
Across the Isle of Wight, we cook in 3 towns and 102 villages and hamlets, so whether your event is in Newport, Ryde and Cowes or a quiet village, the approach is the same: level ground, ventilation and agreed timings. Around 116 places in the Isle of Wight are close to the coast, so we often plan a sheltered cooking spot for the wind.
Newport: If you’re celebrating after a service at a church like The Man in the Moon, live paella at a garden or venue nearby works well. Nearby historic houses include Carisbrooke Castle (1 mile south-west) and Gatcombe House (2.5 miles south). If your event is at a historic house or estate, check its rules on caterers and cooking early. In Newport, the sun sets at about 9:20pm in late June and about 7:10pm in late September, so summer evening events are generally served in daylight. In December it is dark by about 4:00pm, so winter events need lighting where we cook.
For planners, venues and organisers
If your event is in a public space, such as a park, check what permission you need first. We will provide any information the landowner or council asks for.
Wedding planners and venue coordinators are welcome to contact us directly, and we will keep everyone informed on the day.
DIY paella versus live catering
A DIY paella party works for small groups. For big numbers or lots of diets, a caterer makes life easier, and keeps vegetarian and allergy-safe pans separate.
You can cook paella for a crowd yourself, but it takes practice. A big pan needs a burner that heats it evenly, and getting the rice right at scale is tricky. Read how to cook paella for a crowd.
What we need at the venue
Live paella is cooked over gas burners in large pans, so we need a suitable spot. Here’s what we look for:
- Space well away from trees, fences and gazebo walls
- Somewhere close to park and unload
- Flat, firm ground for the cooking area
Diets, allergies and planning
Paella is one of the easiest dishes for mixed diets, because each paella is cooked in its own pan. A few tips:
- Collect dietary needs with your RSVPs
- Let us know about other food at the event
- Make sure most guests can sit to eat
- Tell us about coeliac guests specifically
After service, we pack down our cooking area, quietly and quickly.
Tapas or canapés make a good start while the paella cooks.
What’s in the pans
Seafood paella
Seafood paella starts with a good fish and shellfish stock. The shellfish is added late so it stays tender.
Vegetable and vegan paella
A slow sofrito, seasonal vegetables and a good vegetable stock make a proper main dish. For vegans, the stock is plant-based.
Common questions in the Isle of Wight
Can we choose the seafood?
Seafood choices are agreed when we plan the menu.
Can you do sangria?
Sangria, yes. We can also supply bar staff for your own drinks.
How soon do we need to book?
As early as you can, especially for summer weekends. Ask about your date even if it’s soon.
How many paellas should we have?
Two or three is usual: meat or mixed, seafood, and vegetable or vegan. We’ll suggest a split based on your guests.
Do you cater for vegetarian guests?
Yes. We cook vegetarian and vegan paellas in their own pans, alongside the meat and seafood pans.
Is the paella gluten-free?
We can, if you tell us in advance. The rice is gluten-free, but stocks and chorizo can contain gluten, so we cook a gluten-free paella separately.
Do you have a kids’ option?
Yes. A simple chicken paella is normally popular with children. Include children in your numbers.
