Oakfield: venues, travel and local tips

Oakfield is about 6 miles south-west of Southsea, in the Isle of Wight. From the centre of Oakfield to the outskirts, paella catering works the same way: live cooking, separate pans for every diet and a clear price. We cook in 125 places in the Isle of Wight. Our events stretch from Oakfield to Southampton (17 miles away).

School fairs and fundraisers, for a school such as Dover Park Primary School, can book us as a food stall. For a christening or wedding at a church such as St John's Church, a paella lunch or reception nearby is an easy way to feed everyone. Oakfield is within about a mile of the sea, so a seafood pan is a popular choice. Sea breezes can be strong, so we plan a sheltered cooking spot.

For paella catering in PO33, we plan around your venue and timings. From Park Road, Rink Road and Hope Road or anywhere nearby, we’ll bring the pans to you. You’ll find Oakfield on the A3055, so it is easy for us to reach with the van and pans. Paella catering in Oakfield, made fresh on the day

Watching it cook is part of the experience. People drift over as the sofrito sizzles and the rice turns gold, and the smell does the rest. Whether it’s anniversary celebrations and wedding breakfasts and evening food, we will put together a menu of chicken and chorizo paella, paella Valenciana and black rice for your guests.

For a place the size of Oakfield, your own garden is often the best venue: no hire fees, and live paella feeds everyone without anyone stuck in the kitchen. Let us know about access to the house. You can add tapas, desserts, sangria, bar staff and waiting staff, so the whole menu comes from one caterer.

Questions from Oakfield

What’s the nearest station to Oakfield for guests?

Ryde St Johns Road station, in Oakfield itself.

Can you cater a reception after a service at St John's Church?

Yes, at a nearby garden, marquee or hall where we can cook. Churches rarely have space for live cooking, so the meal is typically elsewhere. Tell us where the reception will be.

Is paella a full meal?

Yes. Paella with bread and salad makes a full main course.

How far ahead should we book?

Early, particularly for summer Saturdays. Ask about your date even if it is soon.

Do you clear up afterwards?

We clear our cooking area away when service is finished. Waiting staff can clear tables if you book them.

How long do you need on site?

We get there in good time to set up. The rice itself takes about 20 minutes, timed around your event.

What does paella catering cost?

Every event is quoted individually, based on what you actually want. Tell us your date and numbers for a clear quote.

Can you do sangria?

Sangria can be added, and provide bar staff to serve drinks you supply.

Dishes our guests love

Black rice

Black rice gets its colour from squid ink, traditionally with alioli. It is a striking addition to a seafood menu.

Mixed paella

Mixed paella brings meat and seafood together.

What affects the price in Oakfield

The same guest numbers can mean different prices, depending on:

  • The length of service
  • Distance and access to the venue
  • Starters, canapés and desserts
  • The paellas you choose

Live paella frequently compares well with a sit-down meal, as there is no kitchen to hire and fewer staff to pay. We’ll send you a quote.

Getting an accurate quote

You do not need everything decided to ask for a quote, but these help:

  • Where the event is
  • A picture of the cooking space, if it’s a garden or field
  • Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal and allergy numbers
  • Approximate guest numbers, including children

Every quote is put together for your event. Give us your date and numbers, and we will confirm whether we’re available that day.

Paella compared with other options

Cold buffets are easy but forgettable, and the food sits out. Paella is cooked in front of your guests and served hot. Larger events normally cost less per head, since the set-up is much the same either way. Give us your numbers and we will quote.

What you get with us

  • We cover Oakfield and the whole of the Isle of Wight
  • Plates, cutlery and waiting staff available
  • Cooking your guests will gather round to watch
  • Every diet catered for, pan by pan

Read Our prices page And The cost guide.

Cook it yourself or book a caterer?

If you do cook yourself, test the pan and burner together beforehand, keep the stock hot, and leave the rice alone once it’s in. And keep children and pets well away from the burner.

Doing it yourself saves money, but the host ends up stuck at the stove. Booking us means you get the show without the stress.

Planning for every diet

We take diets and allergies seriously. Here’s how you can help:

  • Ask about diets and allergies on your invitation or RSVP
  • Confirm allergies by email
  • Let us know if anyone has coeliac disease
  • Plan seating for most guests: paella is easiest eaten sitting down

Paella is best eaten as soon as it is ready, so we plan service for when guests are ready to eat.

Add canapé tapas with the drinks or table tapas as a starter while the paella cooks.

What happens on the day

We get there well before serving, unload, set up the burners and prepare the stock. Guests generally gather round to watch as the paella takes shape. Evenings in Oakfield stay light until about 9:20pm in June, but by late September sunset is around 7:10pm; after dark, the cooking and serving areas need good lighting.

  1. First, tell us about your event.
  2. We suggest paellas and extras and send a clear quote.
  3. We agree timings, access and the cooking spot.
  4. On the day, we set up and cook in front of your guests.
  5. We serve from the pan, then pack down.

Preparing for the day

  • Share the running order, including any speeches
  • Confirm the venue is happy with live cooking

Planning help

Planning the cooking area

Live paella is cooked over gas burners in large pans, so we need a suitable spot. Here’s what we look for:

  • Good ventilation: outdoors, or an open-sided cover
  • Space well away from trees, fences and gazebo walls
  • Parking close enough to carry equipment

Oakfield is a more remote spot, so tell us early and we will plan the journey.

If you’re unsure, send a picture of the space and we’ll say what we think before you book.

Organising for someone else?

For larger events, we plan the number of pans and serving points around your timings, so everyone eats promptly. Let us know how long the food break is.

If you’re organising for someone else, whether you are a planner, an office manager or an event organiser, we’re happy to deal with you and the venue directly. It saves passing messages back and forth.
