Tapas catering for Rookley events

Planning a tapas spread in Rookley

Rookley is about 3 miles south of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. From the centre of Rookley to the outskirts, tapas catering works the same way: live cooking, separate pans for every diet and a clear price. We cater in 125 places across the Isle of Wight, from the larger towns to small villages. Our nearest city page is Southampton, about 19 miles away.

Guests travelling by rail: the nearest station is Shanklin station, about 4.7 miles east. After a ceremony at a church such as St. Olave's Church, canapé tapas with the drinks keep guests happy during photos. The coast is within about 6 miles, so garlic prawns are popular.

Here we cover the PO38 postcode area, so your event can be anywhere in it. That could mean an event in a garden on Manor Crescent, Niton Road and Main Road. For events just outside Rookley, we cover Rookley Green (1 mile south), Merstone (1 mile north-east), Blackwater (1 mile north), Godshill (2 miles south-east) and Sandford (2 miles south-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Newport (3 miles north), Ryde (7 miles north-east), Cowes (7 miles north), Sandown (5 miles east), Shanklin (5 miles east) and Ventnor (5 miles south-east). Remote venues take a little more planning, so contact us in good time.

A little further out are Carisbrooke Castle (2.7 miles north-west) and Whitecroft Hospital (1.6 miles north-west). Not far away are Stenbury Down and Alverstone Mead.

  • Nearby, you will find Chequers Inn (0.7 miles south)

Why live cooking beats a buffet

A sandwich buffet is easy but forgettable. Tapas feel like a treat. Travel, parking and access can affect the price, so it helps to tell us about your venue. The full price is confirmed before you book.

Why us?

  • No hidden extras in your quote
  • Catering across the Isle of Wight, including Rookley
  • Everything cooked fresh at your event
  • Served hot, straight from the pan

Take a look at How we price Or The cost guide.

Planning the cooking area

We cook in large pans over gas burners, so the cooking area needs a little planning. Here’s what we look for:

  • Space for a serving table or station
  • Venue approval for outside catering
  • Space on each table

Rookley is a more remote spot, so tell us early and we’ll plan the journey.

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

Prices and what affects them

Two events with the same number of guests can cost different amounts, because of:

  • Plates, cutlery and glassware
  • Parking and unloading
  • How many courses
  • Your choice of paellas

Seafood and premium ingredients cost more than chicken or vegetable paellas, so the menu you choose affects the price. We’ll suggest options to suit your budget.

Getting an accurate quote

For a quote, it helps to have:

  • A photo of the cooking space, if it is a garden or field
  • Anything your venue supplies
  • Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal and allergy numbers
  • The venue or postcode

It is easy to get a price: tell us the date, place, numbers and any dietary needs. We will come back with a clear quote.

About the dishes

Tortilla española

A vegetarian favourite.

Croquetas

Crisp outside, creamy inside.

Step by step

We get there well before serving, unload, set up the burners and prepare the stock. Guests usually gather round to watch while it cooks. At midsummer, it’s light in Rookley until about 9:20pm, ideal for tapas in the garden. By late September it is dark around 7:10pm, and in December by about 4:00pm.

  1. You tell us the date, venue, numbers and how you’d like the tapas served.
  2. We suggest a selection and confirm a quote.
  3. On the day we arrive, set up and finish the hot tapas on site.
  4. Canapés circulate with drinks, or tapas go to the tables.
  5. We clear away our equipment when service is finished.

How to prepare

  • Pick a flat, firm spot for us to cook
  • Ensure the spot is clear of anything flammable
  • Send us final numbers and dietary needs in good time

Cook it yourself or book a caterer?

Weighing up DIY against a caterer? Consider your numbers, your guests’ diets and your own time. Ask us for a quote and compare.

If you do cook yourself, test the pan and burner together beforehand, keep the stock hot, and do not stir once the rice goes in. Keep a clear zone around the burner.

Dietary needs and planning tips

We take diets and allergies seriously. Help us by following these steps:

  • Let us know if tapas are a starter or the main event
  • Label seafood clearly
  • Label vegetarian and allergen-free dishes
  • Include staff for canapés

Table tapas are set down to share.

Staff to serve canapés.

Organising for someone else?

For big numbers, we plan pans and serving points to keep queues short, so everyone eats promptly. Tell us how long you have for food.

For repeat events, such as annual staff parties or seasonal fairs, let us know your dates early, so we can plan ahead.

Common questions in Rookley

What’s the nearest station to Rookley for guests?

The closest is Shanklin station, roughly 4.7 miles away.

Is Rookley too small for live paella?

No, we cook in small places too. Tell us about lanes, gates and parking.

What do you need at the venue?

Not a lot: a flat spot away from anything flammable, with space to serve. Send us a picture if you are not sure.

Do you cook tapas on site?

Yes, hot dishes are finished at the venue.

Should we have more than one paella?

Generally two or three, so every guest has a choice. Tell us about your guests’ diets and we’ll suggest the mix.

Do we need staff for canapés?

We can provide staff. Canapés need staff to carry them round.

Will there be enough food?

We plan quantities from your guest numbers, timings and other courses, with a little extra built in. Accurate numbers help.

What happens if it rains?

A covered, ventilated spot keeps us cooking in the rain. We’ll make a plan B with you.
