Sandown: your questions answered

Can you cook near the sea around Sandown?

Yes, with a sheltered cooking spot. Wind is the main issue on the coast, so we plan shelter.

Can you cater a reception after a service at Christ Church?

Yes, at a garden, marquee or venue nearby with a suitable spot to cook. Live cooking typically happens at the reception venue, not the church. Tell us where the reception will be.

Is tapas catering available separately?

Of course. Tapas and canapés can be booked on their own.

Can you bring crockery?

If you need them, yes. Crockery, cutlery and napkins, or good-quality disposables can be added to your booking.

Are there vegetarian tapas?

Lots. Tortilla, bravas and Manchego are popular vegetarian choices.

What happens if it rains?

A covered, ventilated spot keeps us cooking in the rain. We’ll talk it through before the day.

Can you serve drinks?

Sangria, yes. For other drinks, we can provide bar staff to serve what you buy.

Can you cook halal paella?

Yes, on request. Tell us how many guests need halal food, and it’s cooked separately.

How the day works

Service is quick: the paella goes straight from the pan to the plate, so large groups are fed quickly. When service is finished, we pack down. Sunset in Sandown is around 9:20pm in June, which suits an outdoor reception.

  1. Send us the date, venue, numbers and serving style.
  2. You get a suggested selection and a price.
  3. On the day, we set up and prepare the hot tapas there.
  4. Canapés go round with the drinks, or table tapas go out to share.
  5. We pack down when service ends.

Before we arrive

  • Have a gazebo or cover ready if rain is likely
  • Check the venue allows live cooking
  • Leave space around the cooking area

After a ceremony at a church such as Christ Church, canapé tapas with the drinks keep guests happy during photos. Historic houses near Sandown include Morton Manor (1.5 miles north-east) and Yaverland Manor (1.7 miles north-east). For a drinks reception at a historic venue, canapé tapas can work where live cooking is not allowed. With the sea within about a mile, seafood tapas such as gambas al ajillo are a natural choice.

Here we cover the PO36 and PO37 postcode area, so your event can be anywhere in it. Streets in the area include High Street, Nunwell Street and Park Rise, and we can cook for an event on any of them. Should I cook it myself?

Not sure whether to cook yourself or book a caterer? Think about numbers, diets and how much you want to enjoy the day. Ask us for a quote and compare.

A DIY paella party works for small groups. For larger numbers, mixed diets or a wedding, a caterer takes the pressure off, and handles separate pans for each diet.

Diets, allergies and planning

With a little notice, every diet is easy. Our advice:

  • Match tapas with Spanish drinks
  • Tell us what role tapas play
  • Label vegetarian and allergen-free dishes
  • Allow more variety if tapas are the whole meal

Canapés go round with the drinks.

Churros or crema catalana to finish.

Where we can cook in Sandown

We will be honest if a space won’t work, and suggest an alternative. What matters most:

  • Space on each table
  • Permission from the venue
  • A spot for our serving station

For somewhere as remote as Sandown, early notice helps us plan the trip.

Not sure about your space? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly.
