Can I cook paella for a crowd myself?

A DIY paella party works for small groups. For larger numbers, mixed diets or a wedding, a caterer takes the pressure off, and handles separate pans for each diet.

You can hire equipment and do it yourself, but there’s shopping, prep and hours of cooking. We take care of all of it.

For planners, venues and organisers

Events in public spaces, like parks, typically need permission. We’ll provide any information the landowner or council asks for.

Planning an event for a club, school or charity in Boars Hill? Paella is quick to serve to a crowd and suits most diets. Give us the details and we’ll suggest a plan.

Diets, allergies and planning

Allergies and diets are taken seriously. Help us by following these steps:

  • Let us know about meals for your band or photographer
  • Tell us how many evening guests to expect
  • Collect dietary needs on the RSVP
  • Decide whether guests queue at the pans or are served at the tables

Evening guests can be served from fresh pans later on, generally timed after the first dance.

Canapé tapas with the drinks reception keep guests going during photos.

Questions from Boars Hill

Which station should guests use for Boars Hill?

Oxford station, about 2.8 miles north of the centre.

We are having a ceremony at Church of St Peter: can you cater afterwards?

Yes, at a nearby garden, marquee or hall where we can cook. Live cooking typically happens at the reception venue, not the church. Tell us where the reception will be.

Do you come to Boars Hill?

Yes, we do. We cook at events in Boars Hill and across Oxfordshire. Tell us your date and we will check availability.

How far ahead should we book?

As soon as you have a date. Popular dates book up first, so it pays to ask early.

How do you work out quantities?

We size the pans for your numbers and the rest of the menu. Tell us what else is being served. See how much paella per person.

Do you provide drinks?

Yes, sangria. We can also supply bar staff for your own drinks.

What do you need at the venue?

A level space for the pans, burners and a serving table, in the open air or a ventilated covered area, plus the venue’s agreement to cooking.

Can you bring crockery?

We can. Tell us what your venue provides and we’ll include the rest in the quote.

Prices and what affects them

Here’s what makes the biggest difference to the price:

  • The length of service
  • The paellas you choose
  • Travel, parking and access
  • Crockery and cutlery, or disposables

Live paella often compares well with a sit-down meal, because it needs no kitchen and fewer staff. Ask us for a quote.

Details that help

The more we know about your wedding, the better we can plan. Please include:

  • Where the event is
  • Diets and allergies you know about

Space, weather and the venue

Most outdoor spaces and many venues work for live paella, but there are a few things to check:

  • A cooking spot outside the marquee, not inside it
  • Flat, firm ground for the cooking area
  • Outdoor space or a ventilated gazebo

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

The process

Service is quick: the paella goes straight from the pan to the plate, so even a long queue moves. Afterwards we clear our cooking area away. For a summer wedding in Boars Hill, the sun sets at about 9:25pm in late June and about 7:10pm in late September, so an evening paella for evening guests is normally served in daylight in high summer. Later in the year, plan lighting: in December it’s dark by about 3:55pm.

  1. Tell us your date, venue and numbers.
  2. We plan your menu course by course.
  3. We agree timings with you and your venue.
  4. We cook live on the day and serve each course.
  5. We pack down, and staff stay as agreed.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us where to park and unload
  • Give us your final numbers and diets
  • Make sure the spot is clear of anything flammable
