Why live cooking beats a buffet
If you are weighing up paella against a traditional menu, think about your venue, your guests’ diets and the feel of the day. Live paella pricing depends on the event. A garden party lunch and a full wedding menu are very different jobs. We itemise everything in your quote.

Prices and what affects them
There are no hidden charges: the price is based on:
- How long we’re needed on site
- The paellas you choose
- Guest numbers
- Parking and unloading
Seafood and premium ingredients cost more than chicken or vegetable paellas, so your choice of paellas affects the total. Tell us your budget and we’ll suggest a menu.

To finish: Spanish desserts or your own cake.
How the day works
On the day, we set up our cooking area, light the burners and start the sofrito. The rice goes in about 20 minutes before serving, so we time everything to your schedule. In Five Ashes, midsummer sunset is about 9:15pm, and by late September it’s nearer 7:05pm, which means evening paella is normally served in daylight in June and July. Later in the year, plan lighting: in December it’s dark by about 3:55pm.
- Tell us your date, venue and numbers.
- We plan your menu course by course.
- Timings are agreed with your venue.

Planning help
Should I cook it myself?
Cooking paella for a crowd yourself is possible, but it’s harder than it looks. A big pan needs a burner that heats it evenly, and getting the rice right at scale is tricky. Our guide to cooking paella for a crowd explains how.
Doing it yourself saves money, but the host ends up stuck at the stove. Booking us means you get the show without the stress.
Catering for every guest
Good planning keeps every guest safe and happy. Try these:
- Count day and evening guests separately
- Decide whether guests queue at the pans or are served at the tables
- Tell us about suppliers who need feeding
- Introduce us to your venue coordinator
The pans are frequently set up where guests can see them, which makes a lovely backdrop for photos.
Sangria and bar staff can be added.
Planning the cooking area
Most outdoor spaces and many venues work for live paella, but there are a few things to check:
- A separate open-sided gazebo if the meal is in a marquee
- Level ground for the pans and burners
- Space well away from trees, fences and gazebo walls
If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise before booking.
