Can I cook paella for a crowd myself?
Cooking paella for a crowd yourself is possible, but it’s harder than it looks. Large pans need the right burners, and getting the rice right at scale is tricky. Our guide to cooking paella for a crowd explains how.
Some hosts like to cook themselves. Common mistakes are mismatched pans and burners, overfilling and stirring. If you’d rather be with your guests, we’ll do the cooking.

Before you choose a spot
Safety and good cooking both depend on the spot we use. We need:
- Somewhere close to park and unload
- Flat, firm ground for the cooking area
- Space well away from trees, fences and gazebo walls
As a London location, Thamesmead is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and parking takes planning: tell us about parking bays, permits or a driveway.

Common questions in Thamesmead
We’re having a ceremony at St Paul: can you cater afterwards?
Yes, at a garden, marquee or venue nearby with a suitable spot to cook. Churches rarely have space for live cooking, so the meal is typically elsewhere. Tell us where the reception will be.
Is parking a problem for events in Thamesmead?
London parking needs planning: let us know about permits or off-street space. We will plan unloading around it.
Can you supply crockery?
If you need them. Proper crockery or good-quality disposables can be added.
Can you cater a party at a village hall?
Generally, if there is outdoor space to cook. Check the venue allows live cooking.
What space do you need to cook?
Less than you might think: a level spot clear of fences, hedges and branches, with room for a serving table. Send us a picture if you’re not sure.
How far in advance should we book?
Early is best, but ask even if it is soon. Send your date and we’ll check.
Can you serve tapas as well?
Yes. Canapé tapas with the drinks, or table tapas to share, served while the paella cooks.
How many paellas should we have?
Typically two or three, so every guest has a choice. Tell us about your guests’ diets and we’ll suggest the mix.

The process
We take care of the food from set-up to service, so you’re free to enjoy your party. If you’ve chosen tapas or canapés, they go out first as the rice is cooking. At midsummer, it is light in Thamesmead until about 9:20pm, so a garden party can run well into the evening. In late September it’s dark by about 7:05pm; add lights for the evening.
- Tell us when and where, and how many.
- You get a menu and a quote.
