Catering an event in Whitstable

Whitstable is about 6 miles north-west of Canterbury, in Kent. Events in Whitstable are planned around your venue and timings: a clear quote, agreed timings and paella cooked live on the day. We cover all 922 towns and villages across Kent. You can also see our page for Canterbury, about 6 miles away.

If you’re celebrating after a service at a church like Church of St John (Methodist), live paella at a garden or venue nearby works well. Parks such as Foxes Cross Bottom generally need the owner’s permission for cooking, so ask before you plan a party there. The coast is within about a mile of Whitstable, so a seafood pan is a popular choice. Coastal wind means we plan a sheltered spot.

For paella catering in CT5, we plan around your venue and your guests. Local streets include High Street, Station Road and Cranleigh Gardens; an event at home on any of them works well with live paella. You’ll find Whitstable on the A299 and A2990, so it is easy for us to reach with the van and pans. If your venue is just outside Whitstable, we also cover Tankerton (1 mile north-east), Chestfield (1 mile east), Swalecliffe (2 miles east), Radfall (2 miles south-east) and Yorkletts (2 miles south-west). We also cook in nearby towns such as Canterbury (6 miles south-east), Margate (15 miles east), Sittingbourne (13 miles west), Faversham (7 miles west), Herne Bay (5 miles east) and Minster (11 miles north-west).

Well-known places in the area include Whitstable and Tankerton Hospital (1 mile north-east) and Tankerton Castle (0.8 miles north). Green spaces nearby include West Blean and Thornden Woods.

  • Schools near Whitstable include Whitstable Junior School (less than half a mile north-west)
  • Nearby, you will find Whitstable Social Club pub (within half a mile north-west)

About our paella catering in Whitstable

Paella has always been food for a crowd: cooked outdoors in a wide, shallow pan and shared. That’s exactly what we bring to your event in Whitstable. For big birthdays and community events and fairs, we can cook chicken and chorizo paella, black rice and mixed paella.

Gardens in Whitstable range from small patios to big lawns, and most can work for live paella. A gazebo over the cooking spot covers you for rain. Each paella is cooked from scratch on the day, never made in advance and reheated, and served as soon as it’s ready.

Our caterer checklist

Why live cooking beats a buffet

Food trucks and street-food vans serve one portion at a time. A big pan serves many guests fast, so everyone can eat at the same time. If you have a budget in mind, tell us, and we’ll suggest a menu to match. Even a simple menu can be a feast.

Why Whitstable hosts choose us

  • Food that becomes part of the entertainment
  • Add tapas, canapés and Spanish desserts
  • Fast service from the pan
  • We cover Whitstable and the whole of Kent

See Our prices page Or Our guide to catering costs.

DIY paella versus live catering

You can hire equipment and do it yourself, but there’s shopping, prep and hours of cooking. A caterer handles all of that.

Plenty of people try cooking paella for their own party. The usual problems are a pan too big for the burner, too much rice and stirring once the rice is in. If you’d rather enjoy the party, let us cook.

Dietary needs and planning tips

Nearly every event has some special diets. To plan for them:

  • Mention any other courses or food
  • Ask for labels on each pan
  • Add a dietary question to your invitations
  • Let us know if anyone has coeliac disease

A short rest after cooking helps, and that’s when we invite guests up.

Crockery, cutlery and waiting staff are available if your venue does not provide them.

Step by step

Once the rice is in, we don’t stir it. That’s how the grains cook evenly and the toasted base, the socarrat, forms. Your guests will smell it before they see it. Evenings in Whitstable stay light until about 9:15pm in June, but by late September sunset is around 7:00pm; after dark, the cooking and serving areas need good lighting.

  1. You tell us the date, venue, guest numbers and any dietary needs.
  2. We suggest a menu and confirm a quote, including what’s included.
  3. On the day we arrive in good time, set up and start the stock.
  4. The rice cooks in full view, while tapas or canapés go round.
  5. It’s served straight from the pan, and we pack down afterwards.

Preparing for the day

  • Keep the cooking spot clear of fences, hedges and branches
  • Choose a level spot for the cooking area
  • Have a gazebo or cover ready if rain is likely

About the dishes

Paella Valenciana

In Valencia, the recipe is fiercely debated. The traditional pan has chicken, flat green beans and butter beans.

Vegetable and vegan paella

The vegetable pan is a dish in its own right: artichokes, beans, peppers and saffron, cooked in its own pan.

Before you choose a spot

Live paella is cooked over gas burners in large pans, so the cooking area needs a little planning. These are the things we check:

  • The venue’s permission for live cooking
  • Space well away from trees, fences and gazebo walls
  • Level ground for the pans and burners

If you are unsure, send a picture of the space and we’ll say what we think.

On the menu in Whitstable

  • Black rice (arroz negro)
  • Vegan paella
  • Chicken & chorizo paella
  • Paella Valenciana
  • Seafood paella
  • Vegetable paella
  • Mixed paella

Your questions about paella catering in Whitstable

We are having a ceremony at Church of St John (Methodist): can you cater afterwards?

Yes, at a nearby garden, marquee or hall where we can cook. Churches rarely have space for live cooking, so the meal is generally elsewhere. Send us the reception address.

What’s the nearest station to Whitstable for guests?

Whitstable has its own station: Whitstable station.

Can you do sangria?

We can make sangria, and provide bar staff to serve drinks you supply.

Can you cater for children?

Of course. A simple chicken paella is generally popular with children. Include children in your numbers.

How soon do we need to book?

As early as you can, especially for summer weekends. Ask about your date even if it’s soon.

What space do you need to cook?

Less than you might think: a level spot clear of fences, hedges and branches, with room for a serving table. Send us a photo if you’re not sure.

Can you cater for vegetarians and vegans?

Of course. We cook vegetarian and vegan paellas in their own pans, alongside the meat and seafood pans.

Can you do gluten-free paella?

We can, if you tell us in advance. The rice is gluten-free, but stocks and chorizo can contain gluten, so we cook a gluten-free paella separately.

For planners, venues and organisers

If you run the same event each year, tell us your dates early, so we can hold the date.

Throwing a party at home? Send us a photo of the garden and tell us about access, and we’ll tell you honestly whether live paella will work.
