How our tapas catering works in Downend
The best spreads mix hot and cold: Manchego, Serrano ham and olives alongside patatas bravas, croquetas and gambas al ajillo. Popular choices include croquetas, Manchego with membrillo and gambas al ajillo, and we are regularly asked to cater sharing tapas starters and drinks reception canapés.
In a rural spot like Downend, tapas can be served in a garden, barn or marquee. We serve straight from the pan, so it’s hot and generous, and service is quick once it is ready.

How it works
When we arrive, we set up the burners and pans and start cooking the sofrito and stock. The rice goes in about 20 minutes before serving, so the timing is planned around your event. A summer drinks reception in Downend has daylight until about 9:25pm at midsummer, perfect for canapés outdoors. By late September it’s dark around 7:10pm, and in December by about 4:00pm.
- Tell us the date, venue and numbers.
- We suggest a selection and a quote.
- We set up and finish hot tapas on site.
- We serve canapés or table tapas.
- We clear our equipment afterwards.
Preparing for the day

Can I cook paella for a crowd myself?
You can cook paella for a crowd yourself, but it takes practice. Large pans need the right burners, and getting the rice right for dozens of people takes experience. Our guide to cooking paella for a crowd explains how.
If you do cook yourself, test the pan and burner together beforehand, have hot stock ready, and leave the rice alone once it’s in. Keep a clear zone around the burner.
Downend: your questions answered
Can you cook at venues in the North Wessex Downs National Landscape?
Yes. Some venues there have rules about vehicles, ground and cooking, so check with yours. We will work to whatever the site needs.
Is Downend too small for live paella?
No, we cook in small places too. Tell us about lanes, gates and parking.
Will there be enough food?
Quantities depend on numbers, timing and courses, with a sensible margin. Give us accurate numbers for the best result.
Can we add tapas or canapés?
Of course. Canapés with drinks or tapas for the tables, served while the paella cooks.
Do you provide drinks?
We can make sangria, and provide bar staff to serve drinks you supply.
Is the paella gluten-free?
We can cook a gluten-free paella in its own pan. Tell us about any coeliac guests when you book so we can plan it carefully.
Do you cater for vegetarian guests?
Of course. We cook vegetarian and vegan paellas in their own pans, alongside the meat and seafood pans.
Do you cook it at the event?
Yes, always. We cook from scratch in large pans at your venue, where your guests can watch.
What’s in the pans
Manchego & membrillo
Manchego with sweet quince.
Tortilla española
A vegetarian favourite when made carefully.
Organising for someone else?
If you are planning an event on someone’s behalf, whether you are a planner, an office manager or an event organiser, we’ll work directly with you and the venue. It keeps things simple.
Venues often have their own rules about outside caterers: where cooking is allowed, access times and the paperwork they need. Tell us what your venue needs and we’ll work to it.
Live paella or other catering?
Tapas can be a starter, a reception or the whole meal, which makes them easy to plan around. Premium seafood costs more than chicken or vegetables, so the menu you choose affects the price. We’ll suggest options to suit your budget.
What you get with us
- Sangria, plus bar staff for your own drinks
- Live cooking, not reheated food
