Calshot parties: what to know

Calshot is about 4 miles north of Cowes, in Hampshire. We cook at parties in gardens, halls and venues around Calshot and nearby villages. Calshot is one of 683 towns and villages in Hampshire where we cook. Our nearest city page is Southampton, about 8 miles away.

After a christening at a church like St George, a paella lunch is an easy way to feed family and friends. If guests are coming by rail, the nearest station is Hamble station, about 4.1 miles north. Calshot is within about 6 miles of the New Forest National Park, so a garden party here comes with a lovely backdrop. The coast is within about 4 miles, so seafood paella frequently features, and we always plan for wind.

We cater parties across the SO45 postcode area. We can cater a party on streets such as Bus Drove, Elmfield Lane and Tristan Close. Neighbouring places where we cater parties include Hillhead (1 mile south-east), Sprat's Down (1 mile west), Stanswood (1 mile south-west), Stonehills (1 mile north-west) and Ashlett (1 mile north-west). Larger places within reach include Gosport (8 miles east), Havant (15 miles east), Eastleigh (11 miles north), Fareham (6 miles north-east), Horndean (15 miles north-east) and Totton (11 miles north-west).

A little further out are Calshot Castle (1.1 miles north-east) and Coldeast (4.5 miles north-east). Not far away are Mercury Marshes and Mill Hill.

Can I cook paella for a crowd myself?

A DIY paella party works for small groups. For larger numbers, mixed diets or a wedding, a caterer takes the pressure off, and handles separate pans for each diet.

If you do cook yourself, test the pan and burner together beforehand, keep the stock hot, and don’t stir once the rice goes in. And keep children and pets well away from the burner.

Is live paella right for your party?

A hog roast is great for meat lovers, but harder for vegetarians and vegans. Paella covers everyone with separate pans. Extras such as tapas, desserts, sangria, staff and crockery are priced separately, so you only pay for what you want.

Space, weather and the venue

Before the day, we will agree where we cook. It needs to meet a few simple requirements:

  • Send a photo of the garden so we can check
  • Parking close enough to carry equipment
  • Agreement from the venue or landowner to cook on site

Chicken & chorizo paella

Chicken and chorizo is a crowd-pleaser, though it is not traditional in Valencia.

All ages love churros.

How we price paella party catering

There are no hidden charges: the quote reflects:

  • The number of people
  • Staff: cooks, waiting staff and bar staff
  • The paellas you choose
  • Whether you need crockery

Live paella often compares well with a sit-down meal, as there’s no kitchen to hire and fewer staff to pay. We will send you a quote.

What we need to know

We can quote more accurately with a few details. Here’s what to include:

  • Diets and allergies you know about
  • The courses you’d like
  • Approximate guest numbers, including children
  • The date and time of the event

Each quote is tailored to your event. Give us your date and numbers, and we’ll check availability at the same time.

For planners, venues and organisers

Planning an event for a club, school or charity in Calshot? Paella is quick to serve to a crowd and suits most diets. Tell us about the event and we will suggest a menu.

Planners and coordinators can contact us directly, and we will keep everyone informed on the day.

Step by step

The paella is cooked in giant, shallow pans over gas burners. It needs a level spot with some shelter and good ventilation, and we agree where that is before the day. Sunset in Calshot is about 8:55pm in late May and 9:20pm in late June. If the party runs past dark, we’ll need light where we cook and serve.

  1. We check your date and the space.
  2. You choose your paellas and any extras.
  3. We set up the burners and start the sofrito.
  4. In goes the rice, and guests gather.
  5. It is served hot, and we clear away afterwards.

Getting ready for the day

  • Have a gazebo or cover ready if rain is likely
  • Leave space around the cooking area
  • Send us final numbers and dietary needs in good time

Calshot questions

We’re having a ceremony at St George: can you cater afterwards?

Yes, at a nearby garden, marquee or hall where we can cook. Churches rarely have space for live cooking, so the meal is typically elsewhere. Send us the reception address.

Do you cater in the New Forest National Park?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules; ask your venue. We’ll work to whatever the site needs.

Will there be enough food?

We size the pans for your numbers and the rest of the menu. Tell us what else is being served. Our guide to portions explains more.

Do you do vegan paella?

Yes, and meat eaters frequently go back for seconds. They have their own pans, stock and spoons.

Can you supply crockery?

We can. Tell us what you need and we will include it in the quote.

Do you cook it at the event?

It is. We bring the pans, burners and fresh ingredients and cook it there and then, serving it hot from the pan.

Will it be noisy or smoky?

There is a cooking smell, but much less smoke than a barbecue. A friendly note to the neighbours helps.

Do you cater for coeliacs?

We can cook a gluten-free paella in its own pan. Tell us about any coeliac guests when you book so we can plan it carefully.
