DIY paella versus live catering

Plenty of people try cooking paella for their own party. The usual problems are a pan too big for the burner, too much rice and stirring once the rice is in. If you’d rather be with your guests, we’ll do the cooking.

Not sure whether to cook yourself or book a caterer? Think about numbers, diets and how much you want to enjoy the day. Ask us for a quote and compare.

Space, weather and the venue

If a space is not suitable, we’ll tell you, and help find another spot. What matters most:

  • Flat, firm ground for the cooking area
  • Parking close enough to carry equipment
  • Agreement from the venue or landowner to cook on site

As a London location, Wimbledon Chase is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and parking takes planning: let us know about permits, bays or off-street parking.

Not sure about your space? Send us a picture and we will tell you honestly.

What paella catering costs

Each event is quoted on its own, and the price depends on a few things:

  • Extra courses such as canapés, tapas and dessert
  • How many staff you need
  • Timings and hours
  • The number of people

Tapas, desserts, sangria, staff and crockery are optional extras, so you only pay for what you want.

What we need to know

These details help us quote quickly:

  • Any dietary needs and allergies
  • The date and rough timings
  • The venue or postcode
  • Anything your venue supplies

We quote for each event separately, so you only pay for what you need. For a quote, fill in our quote form.

Diets, allergies and planning

Most events have a mix of diets. To plan for them:

  • Pick a mix of paellas to cover every diet
  • Tell us how many children are coming
  • Mention any other courses or food
  • Plan seating for most guests: paella is easiest eaten sitting down

Paella is best eaten as soon as it’s ready, so we plan service for when guests are ready to eat.

Need plates or staff? We can provide them.

How the day works

Once the rice is in, we do not stir it. That is what gives paella its separate grains and crispy base. Your guests will smell it before they see it. In Wimbledon Chase, the sun sets at about 9:20pm in late June and about 7:05pm in late September, so summer evening events are usually served in daylight. In December it’s dark by about 3:55pm, so winter events need lighting where we cook.

  1. First, you send us your date, venue, numbers and diets.
  2. You get a suggested menu and an itemised quote.
  3. On the day, we set up the burners and pans and get the stock going.
  4. The rice cooks in full view, while tapas or canapés go round.
  5. We serve it hot from the pan and clear our area when service ends.

Before we arrive

  • Give us your final numbers and diets
  • Let us know who to talk to on the day
  • Tell us when you want to eat

About the dishes

Vegetable and vegan paella

A slow sofrito, seasonal vegetables and a good vegetable stock make a paella that stands on its own. Vegan versions use plant-based stock.

Black rice

Black rice gets its colour from squid ink, traditionally with alioli. It is a striking addition to a seafood menu.

Wimbledon Chase questions

Could we have live paella in Cannon Hill Common?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, normally the council. Check with them, and we will provide our paperwork.

Is parking a problem for events in Wimbledon Chase?

It can be, so tell us about parking bays, permits or a driveway. We’ll work around it.

What do you need at the venue?

Less than you might think: a level spot clear of fences, hedges and branches, with room for a serving table. Send us a picture if you’re not sure.

Do you do vegan paella?

Yes, and meat eaters often go back for seconds. Each is cooked separately, with its own stock and utensils.

What if the weather’s bad?

We need a covered spot, such as a gazebo, marquee or open-sided barn with good ventilation. We’ll agree a wet-weather plan with you.

Is the paella gluten-free?

We can, if you tell us in advance. The rice is gluten-free, but stocks and chorizo can contain gluten, so we cook a gluten-free paella separately.

What areas do you cover?

We cater across London and the South East, including Greater London. See all areas.

How do you work out quantities?

Pans are sized to your numbers and other courses. Tell us what else is being served. Our guide to portions explains more.

Why choose live paella in Wimbledon Chase?

Food trucks and street-food vans serve one portion at a time. A paella pan serves many portions quickly, so everyone can eat at the same time. Premium seafood costs more than chicken or vegetables, so your choice of paellas affects the total. We will suggest options to suit your budget.
