Paella compared with other options

A cold buffet is simple but has no theatre, and the food sits out. Paella is cooked in front of your guests and served hot. Access and travel can make a difference to the cost, so it helps to tell us about your venue. The full price is confirmed before you book.

Why book with us

  • Catering across Medway, including Upper Bush
  • Plates, cutlery and waiting staff available
  • A quote that spells everything out
  • Separate pans for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and halal guests

Prices and what affects them

Here’s what makes the biggest difference to the price:

  • Your choice of paellas
  • Distance and access to the venue
  • The number of people
  • How long we’re needed on site

Compared with a plated meal, live paella is frequently good value, because it needs no kitchen and fewer staff. We will send you a quote.

What we need to know

We can quote more accurately with a few details. Here’s what to include:

  • Your date and when you want to eat
  • The courses you’d like
  • Any dietary needs and allergies
  • A picture of where we’d cook

Most quotes start with a few simple details: date, location, guest numbers and diets. To send them, fill in our quote form.

What’s in the pans

Mixed paella

Mixed paella brings meat and seafood together, and it is frequently the first pan to empty.

Black rice

Black rice gets its colour from squid ink, and is normally served with alioli. It is a striking addition to a seafood menu.

Cook it yourself or book a caterer?

Cooking paella for a crowd yourself is possible, but it’s harder than it looks. Large pans need the right burners, and getting the rice right at scale is tricky. Read how to cook paella for a crowd.

If you do cook yourself, test the pan and burner together beforehand, have hot stock ready, and leave the rice alone once it’s in. And keep children and pets well away from the burner.

Your questions about paella catering in Upper Bush

We are having a ceremony at Church of St Michael and All Angels: can you cater afterwards?

Yes, at a garden, marquee or venue nearby with a suitable spot to cook. Live cooking usually happens at the reception venue, not the church. Tell us where the reception will be.

Is Upper Bush too small for live paella?

No, we cook in small places too. Let us know about access and parking.

What happens with live paella?

We cook from scratch at your venue in big pans, in front of your guests, and serve straight from the pan.

Can you feed a lot of people?

Yes. Large pans and fast service from the pan make it well suited to crowds.

Can we choose the seafood?

Seafood choices are agreed when we plan the menu.

Can you do sangria?

Sangria, yes. For other drinks, we can provide bar staff to serve what you buy.

Do you do vegan paella?

Yes, and meat eaters frequently go back for seconds. They have their own pans, stock and spoons.

Do you cater for coeliacs?

We can, if you tell us in advance. Rice is naturally gluten-free, but stock and some ingredients may not be, so we cook a gluten-free paella separately.

What happens on the day

The cooking is part of the entertainment. Onion, garlic, peppers and tomato go in first, then the stock and saffron, then the rice, which cooks without stirring. Around midsummer it stays light in Upper Bush until about 9:20pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:00pm, so summer evening events are normally served in daylight. For winter events, when it is dark by about 3:50pm, we need lighting at the cooking spot.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and venue.
  2. We plan a menu that covers every diet.
  3. We arrive early to set up the burners and pans.
  4. The paella cooks as guests gather round.
  5. Service is straight from the pan, then we pack down.

Getting ready for the day

  • Keep the cooking spot clear of fences, hedges and branches
  • Confirm numbers and diets before the day
  • Plan cover in case of rain
