FAQs for Acton Vale

We are having a ceremony at St Saviour's Centre for the Deaf: can you cater afterwards?

Yes, at a garden, marquee or venue nearby with a suitable spot to cook. Live cooking typically happens at the reception venue, not the church. Tell us where the reception will be.

What about parking in Acton Vale?

It can be, so tell us about parking bays, permits or a driveway. We’ll work around it.

Can you feed a lot of people?

Very much so. We size pans and serving points to your guest list.

Can you cook in the rain?

We need a covered spot, like a gazebo or open-sided marquee. We plan for rain with you in advance.

Is the paella gluten-free?

A gluten-free pan is no problem. Let us know about coeliac guests in advance so we can plan it carefully.

How soon do we need to book?

Early, particularly for summer Saturdays. Even if it is short notice, it’s worth asking.

Do you cook it at the event?

Yes. We cook from scratch in large pans at your venue, in front of your guests.

Do you clear up afterwards?

Our cooking area is packed away and left clean. Table clearing is available with waiting staff.

How the day works

The paella is cooked in giant, shallow pans over gas burners. We need a level, ventilated spot, which we agree with you beforehand. Around midsummer it stays light in Acton Vale until about 9:20pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:05pm, so summer evening events are normally served in daylight. In December it’s dark by about 3:55pm, so winter events need lighting where we cook.

  1. First, tell us about your event.
  2. You get a menu and an itemised quote.
  3. Timings, access and the cooking area are agreed in advance.
  4. We cook live on the day while guests watch.
  5. It’s served straight from the pan, and we clear our area afterwards.

Paella Valenciana

Valencians take their paella seriously. The classic version is chicken, green beans and butter beans with saffron.

Plated meals need a kitchen and a bigger team. Live paella needs only a level, ventilated spot and permission to cook, and it’s entertaining too. Travel, parking and access can affect the price, so tell us about the venue when you ask for a quote. Everything is confirmed in writing.

DIY paella versus live catering

Not sure whether to cook yourself or book a caterer? Think about numbers, diets and how much you want to enjoy the day. We are happy to give you a quote to compare.

Plenty of people try cooking paella for their own party. The usual problems are a pan too big for the burner, too much rice and stirring once the rice is in. If you’d rather enjoy the party, let us cook.

Planning for every diet

Few dishes handle mixed diets as well as paella, because every paella has its own pan. A few tips:

  • Ask for labels on each pan
  • Tell us about coeliac guests specifically
  • Mention any other courses or food
  • Add a dietary question to your invitations

On the day, you shouldn’t have to think about the food. We set up, cook and serve, and stay in touch with your venue about timings.

Crockery, cutlery and waiting staff are available if your venue does not provide them.

Working with your venue

Throwing a party at home? Send us a picture of the garden and tell us about access, and we’ll let you know if live paella is a good fit.
