Southsea questions

What’s the nearest station to Southsea for guests?

The closest is Fratton station, roughly 0.8 miles away.

How far is Southsea from London?

Roughly 65 miles from the centre of London, and we cover it as standard.

Do you do starters?

Yes, it is the classic pairing. Tapas first, paella to follow.

Who clears up?

We pack down our cooking area after service. Clearing guests’ plates and tables can be added with waiting staff.

What paperwork do you provide?

Send us your list and we’ll respond.

Can you feed our volunteers?

Yes. Crew, volunteer and VIP catering is available, with or without a public stall.

Do you provide plates and cutlery?

If you need them, yes. Crockery, cutlery and napkins, or good-quality disposables can be added to your booking.

Do you cater for coeliacs?

We can, if you tell us in advance. The rice is gluten-free, but stocks and chorizo can contain gluten, so we cook a gluten-free paella separately.

How our festival paella catering works in Southsea

Paella eats well from a bowl with a fork, on the move or on a picnic rug. We’re often asked to cater sports club events and open days, with chicken and chorizo paella, giant-pan paella and seafood paella.

In Southsea, a good food stall can make an event. One paella pitch covers several diets. We plan the timings around your day, whether that is speeches, a lunch break or a festival schedule.

What affects the price in Southsea

Two events with the same number of guests can cost different amounts, because of:

  • Guest numbers
  • Distance and access to the venue
  • How long we are needed on site
  • Your choice of paellas

Travel, parking and access can affect the price, so it helps to tell us about your venue. The full price is confirmed before booking.

Details that help

We can quote more accurately with a few details. Here’s what to include:

  • The date and time of the event
  • A picture of the cooking space, if it is a garden or field
  • Which courses you have in mind
  • Roughly how many adults and children

Most quotes start with a few simple details: the date, where the event is, how many guests and any dietary needs. You can fill in our quote form.

Seafood paella

Prawns, mussels and squid.

Giant paella pans

The giant pan is the star.

Cook it yourself or book a caterer?

For a small group, cooking yourself can work well. For larger numbers, mixed diets or a wedding, a caterer takes the pressure off, and keeps vegetarian and allergy-safe pans separate.

If you do cook yourself, test the pan and burner together beforehand, keep the stock hot, and leave the rice alone once it’s in. Keep a clear zone around the burner.

Community events around Southsea

Southsea is about 2 miles south of Portsmouth, in Portsmouth. Anywhere in PO5, we will come to your venue or garden. Southsea is one of 19 towns and villages in Portsmouth we cover. You can also see our page for Southampton, about 17 miles away.

Running a fête for a church like St Margaret of Scotland? A paella pan draws people in. School fairs, for a school like Craneswater Junior School, are a natural fit for a paella stall. The coast is within about a mile of Southsea, so for seaside events we plan a sheltered pitch, and seafood paella sells well by the sea.

We cater events across PO5, PO4 and PO1 and the streets around it. Streets in the area include Bath Road, Liss Road and Beach Road, and we can cook for an event on any of them. Neighbouring places where we cater events include Milton (1 mile north-east), Fratton (1 mile north), Kingston (1 mile north), Landport (1 mile north-west) and Baffins (2 miles north). We also cook in nearby towns such as Hilsea (3 miles north), Wymering (4 miles north), Paulsgrove (5 miles north), Cosham (4 miles north), Drayton (4 miles north) and Farlington (5 miles north).

A little further out are St. Mary's Hospital (1 mile north) and Southsea Castle (1 mile south-west). Not far away are Milton Locks.

  • Local schools include Mayville High School (0.5 miles west) and St Edmund's Catholic School (1.2 miles north-west)
  • Local pubs include The Festing pub (less than half a mile north)

What we need at the venue

Most outdoor spaces and many venues work for live paella, but a few things matter:

  • Vehicle access before and after the event
  • Clearance from tents and gazebos
  • Room for our cooking and serving area

Not sure about your space? Send us a photo and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Dietary needs and planning tips

Few dishes handle mixed diets as well as paella, because every paella has its own pan. A few tips:

  • Check every diet is covered by the line-up
  • Give traders a single information pack
  • Check how many portions traders can serve
  • Put picnic tables near the traders

We arrive at the agreed time and set up our pitch, following your trader pack.

Tapas and churros can be added to a stall menu.

Organising for someone else?

For big numbers, we plan pans and serving points to keep queues short, so guests are fed quickly. Let us know how long the food break is.

If you are booking for a business, tell us how you’d like to handle the booking and payment, and we will talk you through the process. We can work with your facilities team on access and timings.

How it works

Expect a friendly, organised team. Arrival and serving times are agreed beforehand, set up the pans and burners, and get on with cooking and serving. Evening events in Southsea have light until about 9:20pm at midsummer; after dark, we need a lit pitch.

  1. Send us your event details and pitch information.
  2. We send our menu, needs and paperwork.
  3. We set up on time.
  4. We cook in full view and serve all event.
  5. We pack down and tidy the pitch.
