Space, weather and the venue

We’ll be honest if a space will not work, and suggest an alternative. What matters most:

  • A pitch big enough for the pans, burners and serving table
  • Firm, level ground
  • Spacing from tents and other structures

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise before you book.

Dishes our guests love

Giant paella pans

The huge pan is the star.

Vegan paella

A proper vegan main, in its own pan.

Step by step

When we arrive, we set up our cooking area, light the burners and start the sofrito. The rice goes in about 20 minutes before serving, so we time everything to your schedule. For an evening event in Playden, sunset is about 8:45pm in late May and 9:15pm in late June; after that, the pitch needs good lighting.

  1. Organisers send us the event details, dates and pitch information.
  2. We confirm our menu, pitch needs and documents.
  3. We set up at the agreed time.
  4. We cook in front of the crowd and serve from the pan all event.
  5. We pack down and leave the pitch tidy.

Before we arrive

  • Leave space around the cooking area
  • Have a gazebo or cover ready if rain is likely
  • Confirm the venue is happy with live cooking

For planners, venues and organisers

Throwing a party at home? Send a photo of the space and tell us about parking, and we’ll let you know if live paella is a good fit.

If you are planning an event on someone’s behalf, whether you are a planner, an office manager or an event organiser, we will work directly with you and the venue. It keeps things simple.

DIY paella versus live catering

For a small group, cooking yourself can work well. For big numbers or lots of diets, a caterer makes life easier, and handles separate pans for each diet.

Not sure whether to cook yourself or book a caterer? Think about numbers, diets and how much you want to enjoy the day. Ask us for a quote and compare.

Common questions in Playden

Do you come out to small places like Playden?

Not at all. We cater in villages and hamlets as well as towns. Let us know about access and parking.

What about events near the coast?

Yes, as long as we can shelter from the wind. Sea breezes cool the pan, so a windbreak, building or gazebo helps.

Do you cater in Playden?

Yes. We cater across London and the South East, and Playden is within our area and the rest of East Sussex. For a quote, fill in our quote form.

What do you need at the pitch?

Let us know what the pitch has and we’ll confirm our needs.

Do you do desserts?

Yes, Spanish desserts can be added. Tell us what you have in mind when you ask for a quote.

How much space do you need?

Less than you might think: a flat spot away from anything flammable, with space to serve. If in doubt, send a picture.

Can you feed our volunteers?

We can. Crew, volunteer and VIP catering is available, with or without a public stall.

How far ahead should we book?

Early, particularly for summer Saturdays. Ask about your date even if it is soon.

Why choose live paella in Playden?

For a stall that adds atmosphere, paella is a strong choice. Compared with a plated meal, live paella is often good value, as there’s no kitchen to hire and fewer staff to pay. Ask us for a quote.

Dietary needs are easy to plan for with a little notice. We suggest:

  • Ask traders about serving speed at peak times
  • Put all trader information in one pack
  • Make allergen information visible at every stall
  • Book crew catering in advance

Crew meals are served at set times.

Playden events: pitches and permissions

Playden is about 10 miles north-east of Hastings, in East Sussex. We cook at events in homes, gardens and venues in Playden and the surrounding area. Playden is one of 289 places in East Sussex where we cook. We cook right across the region, from Playden to Canterbury (about 27 miles away).

Running a fête for a church like The Parish Church of St Michael? A paella pan draws people in. If you’re organising a summer fair or fundraiser for a school such as St Michael's Church of England Primary School, a paella stall is a crowd-pleaser. With the sea within about a mile, we plan shelter from the wind for coastal events, and seafood paella sells well by the sea.
