The process

The paella is cooked in giant, shallow pans over gas burners. We need a level, ventilated spot, which we agree with you beforehand. Evening events in Honey Hill have light until about 9:15pm at midsummer; after that, the pitch needs good lighting.

  1. First, we check the dates.
  2. We agree what we will serve and where.
  3. We set up our burners and pans.
  4. The first pans are ready as visitors arrive.
  5. We serve, then clear the pitch at the end.

Getting ready for the day

  • Confirm the venue is happy with live cooking
  • Share the running order, including any speeches

Prices and what affects them

There is nothing hidden: the quote reflects:

  • Plates, cutlery and glassware
  • The length of service
  • Guest numbers
  • How many staff you need

Access and travel can make a difference to the cost, so tell us about the venue when you ask for a quote. Everything is confirmed in writing.

Getting an accurate quote

You don’t need every detail fixed to get a quote, but these help:

  • Whether the venue has crockery or staff
  • A picture of the cooking space, if it is a garden or field
  • Your date and when you want to eat
  • Approximate guest numbers, including children

It is easy to get a price: tell us the date, place, numbers and any dietary needs. We will come back with a clear quote and a suggested menu.

Space, weather and the venue

No two venues are the same, so we will ask about yours when you contact us. In general, we need:

  • A pitch away from tents and structures
  • A level pitch on firm ground
  • Clear information on power, water and waste

Not sure about your space? Send us a photo and we’ll tell you honestly.

DIY paella versus live catering

If you do cook yourself, test the pan and burner together beforehand, keep the stock hot, and leave the rice alone once it is in. Keep a clear zone around the burner.

You can hire equipment and do it yourself, but you will still need to source ingredients, prep and cook for hours. A caterer handles all of that.

How to compare caterers

Common questions in Honey Hill

Can you cook near the sea around Honey Hill?

Yes, with a sheltered cooking spot. Sea breezes cool the pan, so a windbreak, building or gazebo helps.

What’s the nearest station to Honey Hill for guests?

The closest is Canterbury West station, roughly 2.8 miles away.

How many paellas should we have?

Typically two or three, so every guest has a choice. We will recommend a mix based on diets.

Do you come to Honey Hill?

Which areas do you serve?

London and the South East: Kent, Surrey, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire and the Isle of Wight, including Honey Hill.

Can you handle a lunchtime rush?

Paella is cooked in big batches and served from the pan, so service is quick.

Do you take everything away?

We pack down our cooking area after service. Clearing guests’ plates and tables can be added with waiting staff.

Can we add tapas or canapés?

Of course. Canapés with drinks or tapas for the tables, while the rice is cooking.

Live paella or other catering?

If you want a trader that adds atmosphere, a paella pan delivers. The cost per head generally falls as numbers rise, because the cooking set-up is similar for different sizes of event. Give us your numbers and we will quote.
