Spanish desserts for weddings and parties

Sweet ways to finish a paella meal.

Churros and chocolate

Fried dough sticks dusted with sugar, served with thick hot chocolate for dipping. Best made fresh, and a crowd-pleaser with children and adults alike.

Crema catalana

Catalonia’s answer to crème brûlée: a set custard flavoured with citrus and cinnamon under a crisp burnt-sugar top. Easy to serve in individual pots.

Tarta de Santiago

An almond cake from Galicia, traditionally dusted with icing sugar over the cross of Saint James. It’s often made without flour, but always contains nuts, so it’s one to label clearly.

Serving to a crowd

Individual pots and slices are quickest. A dessert table lets guests help themselves later in the evening. If you’re having a wedding cake, a lighter Spanish dessert, or none, may be enough.

Other Spanish sweets

Turrón, a nougat made with almonds and honey, is traditional at Christmas. Flan, a set caramel custard, is popular all over Spain. Polvorones are crumbly almond biscuits. All contain allergens worth labelling, such as nuts, eggs or milk.

Pairing with coffee

A café con leche or a short black coffee pairs well with churros, crema catalana or tarta de Santiago at the end of a long meal.

Allergens

Many desserts contain eggs, milk, nuts or gluten. Check each one against your guests’ allergies and label the dessert table clearly.

Choosing the right dessert

Think about the rest of the meal. After a big paella, a light dessert such as crema catalana in small pots is welcome. For an evening party, churros with chocolate are fun and filling. If you have a wedding cake, you might serve it as the dessert and skip a separate one, or offer a small Spanish sweet with coffee.

Desserts often contain several allergens, so check each one against your guests’ needs and label the dessert table.

Desserts at a paella party

After a generous paella, many guests only want something small. Bite-sized desserts, a few churros or a slice of almond cake with coffee are often enough. For weddings, the cake may be the dessert. For festivals and evening parties, churros with chocolate are a crowd favourite.
