Saffron and garlic in the air has everyone looking forward to dinner long before it is served. Popular choices include Spanish desserts, canapé tapas and a paella wedding breakfast, and we are regularly asked to cater weddings with mixed diets and destination-style celebrations at home.

Weddings in Rock: venues, ceremonies and travel

Rock is about 6 miles north of Worthing, in West Sussex. Give us the address of your wedding in Rock, and we will plan access and set-up. Rock is one of 371 towns and villages in West Sussex where we cook. We cook right across the region, from Rock to Brighton (13 miles away).

If you’re marrying at a church near Rock, such as The Parish Church of St Mary, a reception in a garden, marquee or hired venue nearby keeps the day flowing: we can be cooking during the photos, so the meal is ready when you arrive. Chanctonbury Hill nearby makes a lovely backdrop for photos, and the countryside around Rock suits an outdoor reception. The South Downs National Park is within about 6 miles of Rock, with plenty of rural wedding settings. Check vehicle access and cooking rules with the venue.

Planning the cooking area

No two venues are the same, so we ask about the space before we confirm. Generally, we look for:

  • A cooking spot outside the marquee, not inside it
  • A safe distance from anything that could catch
  • Access for unloading near the cooking spot

If you’re unsure, send a photo of the space and we’ll say what we think.

What we offer

  • Canapé tapas
  • Sangria & bar staff
  • Dessert
  • Table tapas
  • Paella wedding breakfast
  • Evening paella

Diets, allergies and planning

Few dishes handle mixed diets as well as paella, because every paella has its own pan. Here are a few tips for planning:

  • Put us in touch with your venue
  • Let us know about meals for your band or photographer
  • Tell us when speeches will be
  • Collect dietary needs on the RSVP

Fresh pans can be cooked for evening guests, timed for after the first dance.

Add sangria, or bar staff to serve your own drinks.

Can I cook paella for a crowd myself?

You can cook paella for a crowd yourself, but it takes practice. A big pan needs a burner that heats it evenly, and getting the rice right for dozens of people takes experience. Read how to cook paella for a crowd.

Cooking it yourself? Test your pan and burner first, have hot stock ready, and don’t stir once the rice goes in. Keep a clear zone around the burner.

Planners, venues and businesses

For big numbers, we plan pans and serving points to keep queues short, so everyone eats promptly. Let us know how long the food break is.

For repeat events, such as annual staff parties or seasonal fairs, let us know your dates early, so we can hold the date.

How the day works

We get there well before serving, unload, set up the burners and prepare the stock. Your guests are welcome to watch as the paella takes shape. In Rock, midsummer sunset is about 9:20pm, and by late September it is nearer 7:05pm, so an evening paella for evening guests is typically served in daylight in high summer. Later in the year, plan lighting: in December it’s dark by about 3:55pm.

  1. Send us your wedding date, venue and numbers.
  2. Together we plan each course.
  3. Timings are agreed with your venue.
  4. We cook live on the day and serve each course.
  5. We clear our area; staff stay as booked.

How to prepare

  • Arrange parking near the cooking spot
  • Let us know the timings for the day
  • Have a level space ready for the pans

FAQs for Rock

Do you cater in the South Downs National Park?

Yes. Some venues there have rules about vehicles, ground and cooking, so check with yours. We will follow the site rules.

We’re having a ceremony at The Parish Church of St Mary: can you cater afterwards?

Yes, at a nearby garden, marquee or hall where we can cook. Live cooking typically happens at the reception venue, not the church. Send us the reception address.

What if the timings change?

It happens. We time the rice to the actual running order, so it’s ready when you are.

Do you cater for coeliacs?

A gluten-free pan is no problem. Tell us about any coeliac guests when you book so we take the right care.

Can we add tapas or canapés?

Yes, and it’s a popular combination. Tapas go out first, then the paella.

Will you talk to our venue?

Yes, and it saves you passing messages. Introduce us and we’ll sort the details.

Can you cook in the rain?

We need a covered spot, like a gazebo or open-sided marquee. We plan for rain with you in advance.

What about pudding?

We do. Churros, crema catalana and tarta de Santiago are popular choices.
