Newtimber: venues and local tips

Newtimber is about 5 miles south-west of Burgess Hill, in West Sussex. Tell us where your event in Newtimber will be, and we’ll plan access and set-up before the day. Newtimber is one of 371 places in West Sussex where we cook. We cook right across the region, from Newtimber to Brighton (about 6 miles away).

After a ceremony at a church such as The Parish Church of St John Evangelist, canapé tapas with the drinks keep guests happy during photos. If you’re looking at a historic venue around Newtimber, check its catering rules early, as many limit cooking. The South Downs National Park is within about 4 miles of Newtimber, ideal for an outdoor reception.

Wherever your event is in BN6, we can bring tapas catering to you, from busy streets to quiet lanes. Close by, we cover events in Clayton (2 miles east), Hurstpierpoint (2 miles north), Hurst Wickham (2 miles north-east), Hassocks (2 miles north-east) and Keymer (3 miles north-east). Tapas catering for your event in Newtimber

For standing receptions, canapés work best; table tapas suit seated meals. Many events have both. Popular choices include albóndigas, Serrano ham and croquetas, and we are regularly asked to cater tapas starters and tapas with a paella main course.

In a rural spot like Newtimber, tapas can be served in a garden, barn or marquee. The paella is served straight from the pan, so it’s hot and generous, and service is quick once it is ready.

Newtimber: your questions answered

We’re having a ceremony at The Parish Church of St John Evangelist: can you cater afterwards?

Yes, at a garden, marquee or venue nearby with a suitable spot to cook. Live cooking usually happens at the reception venue, not the church. Tell us where the reception will be.

Do you cater in the South Downs National Park?

Yes, though some venues in protected landscapes have extra rules; ask your venue. We will follow the site rules.

Do we need staff for canapés?

Yes, if you want them. Canapés need staff to carry them round.

Can you bring crockery?

Yes, on request. Crockery, cutlery and napkins, or good-quality disposables are available.

When do you arrive?

We arrive well before serving to set up and start the stock. Once the rice goes in, it takes about 20 minutes, timed around your event.

How much paella per person?

We size the pans for your numbers and the rest of the menu. Tell us what else is being served. See how much paella per person.

What do you need at the venue?

Level ground for the burners, pans and a table, outdoors or in a marquee or well-ventilated area, and the venue’s permission for live cooking.

Is it really cooked live?

It is. We arrive with everything we need and cook it there and then, then serve straight from the pan.

Organising for someone else?

If you run the same event each year, tell us your dates early, so we can plan ahead.

For larger events, we plan the number of pans and serving points around your timings, so everyone eats promptly. Let us know how long the food break is.

How the day works

From set-up to serving, we look after the food, so you can enjoy your event. If you’ve chosen tapas or canapés, they go out first while the paella cooks. Sunset in Newtimber is around 9:20pm in June, so canapés can go round outdoors on a summer evening.

  1. First, we check availability.
  2. You choose canapés, table tapas or both.
  3. We set up on arrival.
  4. We serve the spread.
  5. We clear away at the end.

Getting ready for the day

  • Get the venue’s permission for cooking
  • Make sure we can park close by to unload
  • Pick a flat, firm spot for us to cook

Planning help

Is live paella right for your event?

Tapas are flexible, so they fit most plans. Cost depends on guest numbers, the menu and the courses, plus any staff, crockery and travel. We quote for each event individually.

Before you choose a spot

Before the day, we’ll agree where we cook. A good spot ticks these boxes:

  • Room on tables for sharing dishes
  • Access to unload near the serving area
  • The venue’s agreement to outside caterers

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we’ll advise.

DIY paella versus live catering

DIY catering keeps costs down, but the host spends the party cooking. Booking us means you get the show without the stress.

You can cook paella for a crowd yourself, but it takes practice. A big pan needs a burner that heats it evenly, and getting the rice right for dozens of people takes experience. Read how to cook paella for a crowd.

Prices and what affects them

These are the factors that matter most:

  • Chicken, vegetable or premium seafood
  • How many staff you need
  • How many guests are eating
  • How many courses

Larger events usually cost less per head, because the cooking set-up is similar for different sizes of event. Give us your numbers and we’ll quote.

What we need to know

We can quote more accurately with a few details. Here’s what’s useful:

  • Whether the venue has crockery or staff
  • Any dietary needs and allergies
  • The courses you’d like
  • Approximate guest numbers, including children
