DIY paella versus live catering

Cooking it yourself? Test your pan and burner first, have hot stock ready, and do not stir once the rice goes in. Keep a clear zone around the burner.

A DIY paella party works for small groups. For big numbers or lots of diets, a caterer makes life easier, and keeps vegetarian and allergy-safe pans separate.

Woolston: your questions answered

Could we have live paella in Westwood Woodland Park?

Only if the landowner, normally the council, allows it. Check with them, and we will provide our paperwork.

Can you cater a reception after a service at Church of St Mark?

Yes, at a garden, marquee or venue nearby with a suitable spot to cook. Live cooking normally happens at the reception venue, not the church. Send us the reception address.

Do you clear up afterwards?

We clear our cooking area away when service is finished. Waiting staff can clear tables if you book them.

Will the neighbours notice?

Less smoke than a barbecue, more smell. Let the neighbours know.

When should I book?

The sooner the better, but it is always worth asking. Send your date and we will check.

Which areas do you serve?

We cater across London and the South East, Southampton included. See all areas.

Do you offer halal options?

We can. Tell us how many guests need halal food, and it is cooked separately.

Can you cater for children?

Yes, children are easy to cater for. Let us know numbers and ages, and we’ll plan a pan with them in mind.

What we need at the venue

We’ll agree the cooking spot with you before the day. A good spot ticks these boxes:

  • Access for unloading near the cooking spot
  • A picture of the garden helps us check the space
  • Confirmation that open cooking is allowed

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise before booking.

What we offer

  • Seafood paella

Step by step

Service is quick: we serve straight from the pan, so large groups are fed quickly. Afterwards we clear our cooking area away. At midsummer, it is light in Woolston until about 9:25pm, so a garden party can run well into the evening. In late September it’s dark by about 7:10pm; add lights for the evening.

  1. We check your date and the space.
  2. You pick paellas, tapas and desserts.
  3. The burners go on and the sofrito starts.
  4. In goes the rice, and guests gather.
  5. We serve hot and tidy our area afterwards.

How to prepare

  • Give us a contact for the day
  • Have a level space ready for the pans
  • Tell us where to park and unload

Woolston parties: what to know

Woolston is about 2 miles south-east of Southampton, in Southampton. For a party in Woolston, we cater in back gardens, halls with outdoor space, barns, marquees and offices. Woolston is one of 40 places in Southampton we cover.

Thinking of a party in Westwood Woodland Park? Cooking in a public park generally needs permission from the council or landowner, so check first. Christenings and naming days frequently start at a local church such as Church of St Mark, with a paella lunch at home or in a hall afterwards. The New Forest National Park is within about 7 miles of Woolston, so a garden party here comes with a lovely backdrop. Near the coast, within about 2 miles, seafood paella is a natural choice, with shelter from the breeze planned in.

For paella party catering in SO19 and SO14, we plan around your venue and timings. Your party could be at a home on Oak Road, Lake Road and Glen Road or the roads around them. Woolston sits on or near the A3025, which makes travel to your party easy. If your venue is just outside Woolston, we also cover Weston (1 mile south-east), Netley (2 miles south-east), Butlocks Heath (2 miles south-east), Hound (2 miles south-east) and Old Netley (2 miles east). Larger places within reach include Shirley (3 miles north-west), Regents Park (3 miles north-west), Townhill Park (3 miles north), Chartwell Green (3 miles north-east), Maybush (4 miles north-west) and Coxford (4 miles north-west).

Nearby you will also find Gods House Tower - Museum of Archaeology (1.2 miles west) and Netley Castle (1.3 miles south-east). Not far away are Netley Common.

  • Local schools include Woolston School (0.5 miles north-east) and Chamberlayne College for the Arts (0.9 miles south-east)
  • Nearby, you’ll find The Admiral Sir Lucius Curtis pub (0.8 miles west)

What’s in the pans

Tapas

Tapas keep guests going while they watch the pans.

Churros

Fried, sugared and dipped in chocolate, a sweet finish.

Planning for every diet

Every guest is catered for, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and halal included. To get it right:

  • Plan a covered spot for wet weather
  • Keep a clear zone around the cooking area
  • Put out bins for general waste and recycling
  • Add a diet question to the invitation

Kids are fascinated by the huge pans.

Plates, cutlery and waiting staff can be added.

Paella compared with other options

Hog roasts do not suit vegetarians and vegans. Separate paella pans cover everyone. Comparing caterers? Look at what each quote includes: staff, crockery, sides, travel and VAT. We itemise ours.
