Should I cook it myself?

Cooking paella for a crowd yourself is possible, but it is harder than it looks. Large pans need the right burners, and getting the rice right for dozens of people takes experience. Our guide to cooking paella for a crowd explains how.

Not sure whether to cook yourself or book a caterer? Consider your numbers, your guests’ diets and your own time. Ask us for a quote and compare.

For planners, venues and organisers

Organising a club, school or community event in Higher Denham? Live paella feeds a crowd quickly and suits most diets. Give us the details and we’ll suggest a plan.

If you are booking for a business, tell us how you’d like to handle the booking and payment, and we will explain how it works. We can work with your facilities team on access and timings.

Planning the cooking area

If a space is not suitable, we’ll tell you, and help find another spot. The main points are:

  • Flat, firm ground for the cooking area
  • Confirmation that open cooking is allowed
  • Somewhere close to park and unload

If you’re unsure, send a photo of the space and we’ll say what we think before booking.

What happens on the day

On the day, we set up the burners and pans and start cooking the sofrito and stock. Once the rice goes in, it takes about 20 minutes, so the timing is planned around your event. At midsummer, it is light in Higher Denham until about 9:25pm, so a garden party can run well into the evening. In late September it is dark by about 7:05pm; add lights for the evening.

  1. You tell us the date, address, guest numbers and any dietary needs.
  2. We suggest paellas and extras and send a quote.
  3. On the day we arrive, set up our cooking area and start cooking.
  4. Your guests watch the paella cook, with tapas first if you’ve chosen them.
  5. We serve it hot from the pan, then pack down.

Preparing for the day

  • Tell us where to park and unload
  • Check the venue allows live cooking
  • Plan cover in case of rain
