FAQs for Tinsley Green

Could we have live paella in Worth Park Gardens?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, generally the council. Check with them, and we’ll provide our paperwork.

We’re having a ceremony at St Michael and All Angels Church: can you cater afterwards?

Yes, at a garden, marquee or venue nearby with a suitable spot to cook. Churches rarely have space for live cooking, so the meal is normally elsewhere. Tell us where the reception will be.

How long do you need on site?

That depends on your menu and numbers. We agree the timings in advance.

Is paella a full meal?

Paella is a meal in itself. Tapas and desserts can be added if you like.

Do you do vegan paella?

Yes, and meat eaters frequently go back for seconds. Each is cooked separately, with its own stock and utensils.

Can you cater for children?

Children are welcome. Let us know numbers and ages, and we’ll plan a pan with them in mind.

Can you cook halal paella?

Yes, on request. Let us know your halal numbers, and we will cook a separate pan.

Can you provide dessert?

We can add a dessert. Tell us what you have in mind when you ask for a quote.

Watching it cook is part of the experience. People drift over as the sofrito sizzles and the rice turns gold, and the smell does the rest. We cook vegetable paella, paella Valenciana and vegan paella, and we’re frequently booked for anniversary celebrations and family celebrations and christenings.

In a hamlet or village like Tinsley Green, your own garden or a neighbour’s field can make a wonderful venue. Gates, verges and soft ground are worth mentioning when you enquire. We cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and halal guests, each in a separate pan and clearly labelled.

Prices and what affects them

There are no hidden charges: the quote reflects:

  • How many staff you need
  • How many guests are eating
  • Extra courses such as canapés, tapas and dessert
  • How long we’re needed on site

Seafood and premium ingredients cost more than chicken or vegetable paellas, so the menu you choose affects the price. We will suggest options to suit your budget.

Details that help

To speed things up, tell us:

  • Roughly how many adults and children
  • A picture of the cooking space, if it is a garden or field
  • Your date and when you want to eat
  • Whether the venue has crockery or staff

Step by step

It’s a relaxed, well-organised set-up. Arrival and serving times are agreed beforehand, set up our cooking area, and cook and serve without fuss. Around midsummer it stays light in Tinsley Green until about 9:20pm; by late September sunset is nearer 7:05pm, so summer evening service is normally in daylight. In December it is dark by about 3:55pm, so winter events need lighting where we cook.

  1. It starts with your date, venue, numbers and any dietary needs.
  2. We suggest a menu and confirm a quote, including what’s included.
  3. On the day we arrive in good time, set up and start the stock.
  4. Your guests watch the paella cook, with any tapas served first.
  5. It is served straight from the pan, and we pack down afterwards.

Preparing for the day

  • Give us your final numbers and diets
  • Name one person we can ask on the day

The menu, dish by dish

Black rice

Black rice gets its colour from squid ink, and is typically served with alioli. It’s a striking addition to a seafood menu.

Paella Valenciana

The original paella from Valencia is a countryside dish of chicken and vegetables, not seafood. It is a favourite with guests who don’t eat fish.

DIY paella versus live catering

You can hire equipment and do it yourself, but you’ll still need to source ingredients, prep and cook for hours. A caterer handles all of that.

You can cook paella for a crowd yourself, but it takes practice. Large pans need the right burners, and getting the rice right for dozens of people takes experience. Read how to cook paella for a crowd.

Live paella or other catering?

Vans serve one order at a time. A big pan serves many guests fast, which suits weddings and parties where everyone eats together. Cost depends on guest numbers, the menu and the courses, plus any staff, crockery and travel. We quote for each event individually.
