Where we can cook in Little Portugal

Most gardens and venues can host live paella, but there are a few things to check:

  • Open air or a well-ventilated covered spot
  • Agreement from the venue or landowner to cook on site
  • Parking close enough to carry equipment

As a London location, Little Portugal is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone, and parking takes planning: let us know about permits, bays or off-street parking.

If in doubt, send us a picture of the spot and we will advise before booking.

Prices and what affects them

Two events with the same number of guests can cost different amounts, because of:

  • How many courses
  • Distance and access to the venue
  • Chicken, vegetable or premium seafood
  • How many staff you need

Compared with a plated meal, live paella is frequently good value, because it needs no kitchen and fewer staff. Ask us for a quote.

Details that help

Good planning starts with a few facts. Try to include:

  • Expected numbers
  • Where the event is
  • Whether the venue has crockery or staff
  • The date and time of the event

To get a price, fill in our quote form. Give us the details of your event, and we’ll suggest paellas and extras to suit.

Can I cook paella for a crowd myself?

Some hosts like to cook themselves. The usual problems are a pan too big for the burner, too much rice and stirring once the rice is in. If you’d rather enjoy the party, let us cook.

FAQs for Little Portugal

Can you cook in Larkhall Park?

Only with permission from the park’s owner, generally the council. Ask them first, and we’ll send any information they need.

We’re having a ceremony at St Stephen's Church: can you cater afterwards?

Yes, at a garden, marquee or venue nearby with a suitable spot to cook. Live cooking normally happens at the reception venue, not the church. Send us the reception address.

Can you serve drinks?

Yes, sangria. We can also supply bar staff for your own drinks.

Can we choose the seafood?

We will talk through seafood options when we plan your menu.

How do you work out quantities?

Pans are sized to your numbers and other courses. Let us know about any other food. See how much paella per person.

Is paella a full meal?

It can be. Paella with bread and salad makes a full main course.

Which paella is most popular?

Two or three is usual: a mixed or chicken paella, a seafood paella and a vegetable or vegan one. Our menu lists the options.

Is the paella cooked on site?

It is. We arrive with everything we need and cook on the day, serving it hot from the pan.

Who books paella catering in Little Portugal?

Live paella is made for outdoor events: cooked outside, served hot and shared.

Big or small, live paella works well. Common bookings include:

  • Birthday celebrations
  • Fairs, fêtes and festivals
  • Summer garden parties
  • Staff parties and work lunches

For a christening or wedding at a church such as St Stephen's Church, a paella lunch or reception nearby is an easy way to feed everyone.

Our caterer checklist

Step by step

We get there well before serving, unload, set up the burners and prepare the stock. Your guests are welcome to watch while it cooks. Evenings in Little Portugal stay light until about 9:20pm in June, but by late September sunset is around 7:05pm; once it is dark, we need light to cook and serve by.

  1. Send us your date, numbers and venue.
  2. We plan the menu with you, including every diet.
  3. We arrive in good time to set up.
  4. The paella cooks as guests gather round.
  5. We serve hot from the pan and clear our cooking area.

How to prepare

  • Let us know the timings for the day
  • Plan cover in case of rain
  • Leave space around the cooking area

Live paella or other catering?

Compared with a hog roast or barbecue, paella makes vegetarian, vegan and halal guests easier to cater for, because each paella has its own pan. It’s served quickly from the pan, so queues move. Premium seafood costs more than chicken or vegetables, so the menu you choose affects the price. Tell us your budget and we will suggest a menu.
